Romi Crawford

Romi Crawford is an educator and writer committed to responsive, collaborative, recuperative, and living art histories that are often experimental in form, including exhibitions, convenings, schools, and publications. Crawford’s scholarship and curatorial projects often examine historical instances of collective artmaking and are collaborative and intergenerational by design. She is routinely concerned with artistic methods and strategies that emerge from uneven social and economic conditions, and how such circumstances embolden new genres. Crawford’s research into pedagogical activities that embed in art practices of the 1960–1970s prompted her to establish the BAM School Modality and the New Art School Modality. Crawford is a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and editor of The Studio Museum in Harlem: A History (Yale University Press, 2026).
